Exploring the Future of Regional Passenger Rail Mobility

Island Rail Corporation (IRC) is exploring the potential restoration of modern and expanded passenger rail services between North Vancouver and communities throughout the Sea to Sky region, with possible future extension into the Cariboo region via the provincially owned BCR rail corridor. The initiative seeks to enhance mobility reliability, safety, and sustainability while strengthening economic and tourism opportunities across the Sea to Sky and Cariboo regions of British Columbia.

With renewed public interest in reliable, climate-smart regional transportation options, discussions have emerged among municipalities, First Nations, and provincial stakeholders regarding the potential reintroduction of passenger rail service along the Sea to Sky corridor and beyond. The concept reflects growing recognition of rail as a critical component of a balanced, multi-modal transportation future for British Columbia and the broader national transportation network.

Island Rail Corporation brings extensive experience in rail operations, infrastructure planning, and community partnership development. IRC has participated in preliminary discussions with regional partners to explore how rail can once again serve as a safe, reliable, sustainable, and economically beneficial mode of travel between the cities of the coast, the mountains of the Sea to Sky corridor, the plateaus of the Cariboo interior, and the many communities in between.

As with all such initiatives, future progress will depend on collaboration among multiple stakeholders, including provincial, federal, municipal, Indigenous, and industry partners.

Sea to Sky Rail and Coast Cariboo Rail, operating along the BCR corridor, represent an opportunity to connect people and communities by delivering safer, more dependable year-round transportation for residents, workers, and visitors while supporting British Columbia’s economic and climate goals.

IRC welcomes dialogue with regional and provincial stakeholders interested in exploring the future of rail mobility in British Columbia.
